Constraints:

  • Total Rent and Square Footage should be greater than 0.
  • Number of bedrooms should be between 1 and 8.
  • Number of Persons in The Room should be between 1 and 10.

Square Footage (ft²) = width (ft) * length (ft)

Rent Split Calculator Formulas and Example

In this section we will see how to calculate the rent for roommates manually using an example to simplify the steps of calculations.
Let's consider the example below:

  • Total Rent: TR = 1200 $
  • Total Square Footage: TSF = 1000 ft²
  • Number of bedrooms: NB = 2
  • Bedroom 1:
    Square Footage: SF1 = 500 ft²
    Number of Persons in The Room: NP1 = 2
  • Bedroom 2:
    Square Footage: SF2 = 300 ft²
    Number of Persons in The Room: NP2 = 1
  • For the results we will use these abbreviations:
    Every person in the first bedroom will pay R1.
    Every person in the second bedroom will pay R2.

The first step is to calculate these values:
Total number of persons: TNP = NP1 + NP2 = 2 + 1 = 3
Total Square Footage of Bedrooms: TSFB = SF1 + SF2 = 500 + 300 = 800 ft²
BTC = ( TSFB / TSF ) * TR = (800 / 1000) * 1200 = 960
CCP = ( TR - BTC ) / TNP = ( 1200 - 960 ) / 3 = 80

Now we can calculate the value of R1 and R2 using these formulas:
R1 = (( SF1 / TSFB ) * BTC ) / NP1 + CCP = (( 500 / 800 ) * 960) / 2 + 80 = 380$
R2 = (( SF2 / TSFB ) * BTC ) / NP2 + CCP = (( 300 / 800 ) * 960) / 1 + 80 = 440$

So every person in the first bedroom will pay 380$ and every person on the second bedroom will pay 440$.
